MOLTER'S TRUMPET CONCERTO BY THE MASTER MADUFF Johann Melchior Molter was a composer active in the late German Baroque and Preclassical period. He was music director of the court orchestras of Karlsruhe and Eisenach, and composed numerous works in multiple genres in the pre-classical style. The three trumpet concertos in particular, all composed for Karl Pfeiffer, the court trumpet player in Karlsruhe, are impressive for their lively tunes and beautiful melodies that make the most of the high register. Jean-François Madoff, a virtuoso period wind player who played Telemann's Concerto for Trumpet and Horn (ACC-24318) with great skill, will be playing a traditional natural trumpet without a vent hole. It is rare in this day and age to find a musician who can play this natural trumpet perfectly, and this recording could not have been made possible without Madoff's expertise. Tomohiro Sugimura plays natural trumpet as a member of Musica Fiorita, an ensemble led by Daniela Dolci. Christian Reiseler and Ernst Schröder also play the chalumeau.The chalumeau is the instrument from which the clarinet developed in France. It was used in orchestras until the second half of the 18th century. Madoff's inventive playing and Musica Fiorita's lively ensemble bring back the sounds of Molter's works from that period.
