Boasting an unprecedented scale and quality—with over 100 symphonies—this volume includes Symphony No. 1, considered the origin of Haydn’s symphonic works, and features a lineup of his four earliest symphonies, believed to have been composed between 1759 and 1766 at the latest, before Haydn took up his post in Eisenstadt. While the Symphony No. 1, No. 4, and No. 10 all share common characteristics—being in D major, featuring an Andante in the second movement, and following a three-movement form derived from the Italian opera sinfonia that begins with a fast movement— No. 5, which begins with an Adagio, follows a traditional four-movement form with a minuet in the third movement. This suggests that Haydn was not bound by any particular style but instead engaged in ambitious trial and error; his approach—delving deeply with a spirit of experimentation based on his own insights—aligns perfectly with Fai’s style throughout this series, resulting in a performance of great persuasiveness.
