The superb virtuosity of Kellas' solos and the stunning persuasiveness of his cadenzas! An incredibly elegant and exciting collection of C.P.E. Bach's works by Kellas. Cellist Jean-Guyan Querras is an artist whose activities are steeped in a sincere attitude toward music. Backed by a lucid and unambiguous reading of the score, his music is increasingly brilliant, precise, and transparent, and one senses that Queras is climbing to even greater heights. The Ensemble Resonanz performs with him. This string ensemble of 18 virtuoso musicians, whose crisp interpretations of both great works of the past and contemporary music captivate the listener, is a perfect match for Kelas. Kellas was artist in residence from 2010-13 (Minaj, conductor, was artist in residence from 2018-20). The works recorded here were written during C.P.E. Bach's Berlin years, when he was at his most productive. The cello concerto in particular is a spectacular virtuosity written for a virtuoso solo instrument, where the solo instrument and orchestra are treated as equals, and the dialogue between the two is fascinating.In the A minor concerto, after a stirring orchestral prelude at the beginning of the first movement, the entry of the cello played by Kellas is very delicate, elegant, and extremely impressive. The beautiful interplay between the orchestra and the soloist is very impressive and draws you in. The cadenza at the end of the concerto is the quintessence of Kellas, with moments and virtuosity that make you think it is contemporary music. The A major concerto is one of C.P.E. Bach's most famous works, and the rapid Gigue-like movement in the last movement shows the skill of the Ensemble Resonanz and the superb technique of Kellas. While it has been somewhat established that symphonies written before Mozart were performed on period instruments, this brilliant performance on modern instruments allows us to fully appreciate the joy of C.P.E.
