Description:

From youthful brilliance to profound consequences, the musical journey of the "heroes" of his homeland, conducted by a rising Romanian star. 3 CD set. Deutsche Grammophon is pleased to announce the release of three CDs of recordings of Georges Enescu by Grammy Award-winning conductor Christian Macelaru, artistic director of the Georges Enescu International Music Festival, and the Orchestre National de France, of which he is music director. It includes Symphonies Nos. 1 through 3, and "Romanian Rhapsody" Nos. 1 and 2. Georges Enescu (1881-1955) was a Romanian composer, violin virtuoso, and violin teacher whose students included Yehudi Menuhin and Arthur Gruumiaux. He lived in the United States and France, but was heavily influenced by the musical heritage of his native country and produced highly individualistic works. Pablo Casals called him "the most astonishing musician since Mozart. And while the "Romanian Rhapsody" (especially No. 1) on this album is very popular, unfortunately the three symphonies are not yet found as a real centerpiece in the symphonic repertoire. Georges Enescu was not only Romania's greatest composer, but a true Renaissance man. He was a violinist, conductor, and educator who greatly influenced the younger generation of musicians of his day. Yehudi Menuhin said of him, "He remains the divine standard by which I judge others," and Eugène Ysaÿe paid tribute to him by dedicating his Third Sonata for Solo Violin to him. Enescu's own extensive oeuvre included three symphonies composed between 1905 and 1918, as well as two more begun in 1935 and 1941, but left unfinished as of his death in 1955. Cristian Macelaru was born in Romania in 1980. He is a rising star who began his musical education in the U.S. as a violinist before moving to conducting and steadily building a career; beginning with the 2019/20 season, he will serve as principal conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, Germany, a position that has been extended through 2025.He has also been appointed Music Director of the Orchestre National de France for the 2020/21 season, which has also been extended until 2027. In his first season as artistic director, Macelaru conducted the Orchestre Philharmonique National de Georges Enescu, the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, and the Romanian National Youth Orchestra at the Georges Enescu International Music Festival in 2023. And Macelaru and the Orchestre National de France will play a key role in the opening ceremony of the Paris Summer Olympics in July 2024. The five works on this album perfectly illustrate the artistic development of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. From the youthful brilliance of the First Romanian Rhapsody to the profound, mystical, philosophical conclusion of the Third Symphony, we can discover and relive the musical journey of this great genius and my personal hero, Georges Enescu." --. Cristian MacElaru The booklet includes a foreword by Christian Machelal himself and liner notes by Rob Cowan (in English and German). (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS) Scheduled to be recorded Georges ENESCU:.
