From overwhelming funk tracks that have cemented their reputation as “the best funk band in the universe” to exquisite ballads considered the very essence of soul music, TOP is the band that top artists around the world unanimously agree is “the musicians’ musician!” Their talent, popularity, and undeniable stage presence—every aspect of them is simply outstanding. In fact, since the start of this century, they’ve been extremely infrequent in releasing new material. Their recent releases include a live album capturing their 2008 40th-anniversary concert, preceded by *American Soulbook*, which featured their unique takes on classic soul songs, as well as several greatest-hits compilations and collections of live recordings from the 1970s. When it comes to albums featuring original new songs, you have to go all the way back to *Oakland Zone*, released in 2003. In that sense, this is truly their first “new album” in 15 years. Even though there hadn’t been much new news about them, they have performed in Japan without fail every year. In fact, at their main venue, the Blue Note Tokyo, they boast such drawing power that they consistently sell out all 10 shows over five days. Moreover, Japan is the only place in the world where the number of younger fans is actually growing every year. In fact, enthusiastic fans in their teens and twenties form long lines for autograph sessions after the shows. All the band members—including the “golden rhythm section” of Rocco (b) and Garibaldi (ds)—respond to these fans with beaming smiles. Now, TOP has finally completed their long-awaited new album, *Soul Side of Town*. It features a collection of handpicked tracks written over the past 15 years, and band leader Emilio Castillo chose Joe Vanelli—brother of Gino Vanelli—as co-producer. With master engineer Bernie Grundman at the helm, the lineup is nothing short of stellar.
