Rolf Rislevan's improvisational expressionThe latest recording by Norwegian classical musician Rolf Rislevan is a collection of works from the Renaissance era in which he freely manipulates the baroque guitar and theorbo. The album, entitled "La Masquerade," features improvisational works by de Vizet and Corbetta, as well as Lislevan's own improvisations. French Renaissance composer Robert de Vizet, who probably studied under Italian-born Francesco Corbetta, was a musician at the court of Louis XIV and a renowned guitar and theorbo player. De Vizee published two books of music, "A Book of Guitar Dedicated to the King" and "A Collection of Songs for Guitar," and wrote numerous works for theorbo and baroque lute, which have become a valuable repertoire for contemporary players.Rolf Lislevan was born in Oslo in 1961 and studied classical guitar at the Norwegian National College of Music from 1980 to 1984. He then studied with Hopkinson Smith and Eugène Dombois at the Schola Cantorum Basel in Switzerland, joined Jordi Savall's ensemble, and since 1993 has been a professor of lute at the Trossingen Higher School of Music. 2006 saw the release of his first album on ECM, "Nouve Musiche" and in 2009 "Diminuito". Both albums feature elegant playing with a heavy emphasis on improvisational elements. Universal Music/IMS
