YAPOOL has released their long-awaited second album! It’s a concept album unlike anything you’d expect these days. What do they want to smash to pieces? The album opens with “Smash It,” a track that declares, “Smash the Tokyo Tower—and everything else.” They say there are three things they want to smash right now. The first is old music, and the second is trendy music. The third is YAPOOL as they’ve been up until now, and the fourth is Tokyo itself. Destruction has long been a symbolic, primal impulse in rock—and especially in punk. Several years have passed since they moved to Tokyo and started the band, and the album conveys a message that they want to tear down—and rebuild—the things that haven’t changed at all, the things that have become distorted, and the things that are simply boring. While the album features intense tracks, it also includes some mid-tempo songs; however, according to the members, these were just created by chance, and they didn’t specifically set out to achieve a balance. The album even includes YAPOOL’s first-ever love song, giving it a different feel from the purely straightforward vibe of their debut album. The album closes with “Tokyo Scrap and Build,” a track whose lyrics are peppered with titles from YAPOOL’s past works, as the band sings about wanting to smash them all to pieces. It’s a concept album that seems impossible these days, yet is the very newest—please be sure to give it a listen.
