Shining a Light on Forgotten Female Composers— Miku Kadono’s Debut Album, Filled with Masterpieces of French Music and the Joy of Rediscovery Miku Kadono’s debut album, *Appels*, is an ambitious collection centered on *Legendary Women*, a collection of works by Mel Bonis—a female composer who lived during the same era as the modern French music masters Debussy and Ravel but whose work remained long overlooked—in addition to pieces by those very masters. The program offers a fresh perspective on French music of the Belle Époque while allowing listeners to savor the resonant charm of these contemporary artists—Mel Bonis, Debussy, and Ravel. Furthermore, this album marks the landmark first release from “Appels,” the new label launched by Miki Kadono. “Appels” means “call” in French, and true to its name, this album invites listeners to discover long-forgotten masterpieces and new music. Mel Bonis (1858–1937) was a French female composer who left behind more than 300 works. Although she studied under Debussy at the Paris Conservatory and her exceptional talent was recognized, she never received the full recognition she deserved due to the constraints of her era. *Legendary Women* is a collection of piano pieces depicting seven women from literature, mythology, and the Bible. In recent years, it has been established that this title was not chosen by the composer herself but was assigned by the publisher; nevertheless, a common thematic thread runs through each piece, and through Bonis’s distinctive rich sense of harmony and exceptional descriptive power, a diverse array of female characters is vividly brought to life. The second half of the album features masterpieces by Debussy and Ravel. These works, characterized by their fantasy, color, and exceptional pianistic technique, resonate with Bonis’s music, bringing to life the rich world of contemporary French art. The CD booklet includes program notes by musicologist Tokiko Inoue and a contribution by cultural historian and gender studies scholar Mari Yoshihara. This content offers a multifaceted perspective that deepens our understanding of Mel Bonis’s works, her life, and the historical context in which she lived. Note that Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” included at the end of the album, is a CD-exclusive track not scheduled for digital release. APPELS
