*THE JUNIPER TREE* (Japanese title: *Björk’s “The Juniper Tree” — Based on a Grimm’s Fairy Tale*) is an Icelandic fantasy film written and directed by Nítzuka Keen in 1986 and released in 1990. It is known as the starting point of Björk’s acting career and as a work that reinterprets the Grimm’s Fairy Tales from a feminist perspective. This album features recordings made for release from a performance presented last fall in Ghent, Belgium, by Berlin-based musician MIDORIHIRANO, commissioned by VIERNULVIER—a label operated by the Ghent Cultural Center. This soundtrack features MIDORIHIRANO’s fresh interpretation of the beautiful and fantastical film *The Juniper Tree*, set against the backdrop of Iceland’s desolate landscapes. MIDORI’s piano compositions, while deeply rooted in minimalism, express the emotional shifts of the characters, and the synthesizer tones emerge from a supple silence, vividly capturing the film’s monochrome aesthetic.
