A tribute album by Branford Marsalis, one of today’s greatest saxophonists, commemorating the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, is now available.
For this album, he focused on the 1963 album *John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman*, which Coltrane created in collaboration with Johnny Hartman. For this reinterpretation of the classic album—which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013—he invited the “Queen of Jazz Vocals” and five-time Grammy Award winner Diane Reeves to join him. This collaboration, which both artists had long desired but had never previously been able to realize, has finally come to fruition on this album. The recording was completed in just four days with Marsalis’s regular quartet. Reportedly, the arrangements were not prepared in advance but were refined by all members together in the studio. The album features all tracks from *John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman*—a project that holds special significance for both Marsalis and Reeves—in breathtaking new arrangements. It also includes recordings of Coltrane’s original compositions, such as “Big Nick” and “Central Park West,” performed by Marsalis’s quartet. Furthermore, the album includes three bonus tracks recorded in both quartet and trio configurations, featuring songs such as “Say It (Over and Over Again)” from Coltrane’s timeless masterpiece *Ballads*. This album weaves together the ultimate tribute to mark the 100th anniversary of Coltrane’s birth, making it the definitive release of this commemorative year.
