Karel Husa, a leading Czech composer Performed by the Bel Fiore Quintet A collection of works by Karel Husa, one of the leading 20th-century Czech composers, performed by the Czech Bel Fiore Quintet, formed in 2005. While Husa is well-known in Japan as a composer for wind ensembles, the quintet is dedicated to exploring his works. Members are active in major Czech orchestras including the Czech Philharmonic, PKF-Prague Philharmonia, and the Czech National Theatre Orchestra. They boast awards from numerous international competitions such as the ARD Munich International Music Competition, Prague Spring International Music Competition, and Concertino Prague. Husa traveled to Paris, studying under Nadia Boulanger and Arthur Honegger. After the Communist coup in February 1948, he decided not to return to his homeland, spending most of his subsequent life in the United States at Cornell University. Yet he never forgot his homeland. Regarding his "Reminiscences for Woodwind Quintet and Piano," Husa stated: "Reminiscences are vivid, but not necessarily accurate. Our memories are a blend of reality and imagination......"To express all of this, I wanted the work to develop from simple sounds and return to them, while exploring new combinations and resonances for the quintet." He also poured his affection for birds—those "wonderful beings that magically color our lives"—into Five Poems for Woodwind Quintet, employing diverse musical techniques including microtones and aleatoric (chance-based) music. This collection of Fusa's works features the Bel Art Quintet, members of the Prague Philharmonia, and the rising star pianist Matouš Zukal, presenting a truly formidable lineup. SUPRAPHON
