All of the symphony recordings made by Lovro von Matacic and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for Supraphon are finally being released as a complete set. Matacic was born in Croatia during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He studied conducting in Vienna, where he was captivated by the world of classical music—particularly opera—and honed his skills. Having lived through two world wars, Matacic emerged as a charismatic figure capable of inspiring and energizing orchestras around the world, drawing on his diverse and often harrowing experiences. He frequently conducted orchestras from around the world, including the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Munich Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. From 1974, he served as Music Director of the Monte-Carlo Opera for five years, where he fully demonstrated his talents. The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra also consistently welcomed Matacic as a special guest conductor, and since recording Beethoven’s “Eroica” in March 1959, his recordings for Supraphon continued. In Bruckner—a genre synonymous with Matacic and the Czech Philharmonic—he recorded masterful performances of the monumental Symphony No. 5, the best-known Symphony No. 7, and Symphony No. 9, which represents the pinnacle of late Romanticism. Matacic’s Bruckner recordings offer a unique perspective on the orchestra during both the Ančer and Neumann eras. This box set also features a collection of unparalleled historic performances, including Wagner works that are characteristic of Matacic the opera conductor. For this box set release, renowned engineer Ales Dvořák has remastered the recordings from the original master tapes. SUPRAPHON
