Smetana's bicentennial anniversary. A collection of Smetana's orchestral works by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Popelka! This year (2024) marks the 200th anniversary of Smetana's birth and the 140th anniversary of his death. The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Petr Popelka, who will be the orchestra's principal conductor and music director starting in the 2022/23 season, will present a three-CD set of Smetana's orchestral works. The duo also performed "My Homeland" during a much-talked-about tour of Japan in July 2024. In addition to serving as principal conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Popelka has made guest appearances with prominent European and American orchestras and opera houses around the world. He performs the works of Smetana, a composer born in his native country, with extraordinary passion. The album includes Smetana's early music, the "Festive Symphony" dedicated to the wedding of the 24-year-old Emperor Franz Joseph I and Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria, Shakespeare's "Richard III," Schiller's "Wallenstein's Camp," and works from Smetana's prime years, including the String Quartet No. 1, "From My Life," by George Szell, and the "Piano Concerto No. 2" by Gustavo Pérez.
