Richter, known for his beautiful melodies A collection of works by Franz Xaver Richter (1709–1789), to whom the Supraphon label has devoted significant recording efforts. This disc features four pieces, including the Oboe Concerto—the world’s first recording on period instruments—and “Sing Loudly to God.” A leading figure among the composers who moved from Bohemia to Germany in the 18th century and played a pivotal role in the Pre-Classical period, Franz Xaver Richter served the Mannheim court as a bass singer, string player, and composer at the Mannheim court. Thanks to his remarkable achievements with the court orchestra, he has gone down in music history as a leading figure of the so-called “Mannheim School.” As a singer himself, Richter’s works are all characterized by beautiful melodies, and the pieces included here are typical examples of his style. Richter’s Oratorio for Good Friday, *The Descent from the Cross* (SU4204), and his *Requiem* (SU4177), performed by the Czech Baroque Ensemble under the direction of Roman Válek, are also currently available to great acclaim.
