Jiří Vodička, the new star of Czech violin playing A full-scale solo debut in a programme of unaccompanied virtuoso works Jiří Vodička, born in 1988 and the rising star of the Czech violin school, makes his full-scale solo debut with a recital of works for unaccompanied violin. Blessed with flawless technique, outstanding intonation and a virile, eloquent manner of delivery, he has been attracting attention since childhood through appearances with the Prague Philharmonia, the Prague Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles. The conductors Jiří Bělohlávek and Jakub Hrůša hold him in high regard and have collaborated with him repeatedly in concerto performances, while Gidon Kremer, recognising his gifts, invited him to the Lockenhaus Festival he founded (2011). In 2012 he was appointed violinist of the celebrated Smetana Trio, founded in 1934. In July 2013 he toured Japan with the reformed Smetana Trio to considerable acclaim, and his keenly incisive playing can also be heard on an album of Shostakovich and Ravel recorded in September and December 2013 (SU4145). The unaccompanied works recorded here range widely: Bach, Kreisler, Paganini, Ernst, Ysaÿe and Haas. Of particular note is Ernst's famously fiendish Grand Caprice on Schubert's "Erlkönig". Because it reproduces the original piano part as well, virtually the entire piece is written in double stops, and with its left-hand pizzicato and harmonics played while stopping the string it deploys every technique imaginable - one of the supreme achievements in the unaccompanied repertoire. Even great violinists tend to steer clear of it and fine recordings are few, which makes this account, so satisfying both technically and musically, all the more welcome. Also included are Kreisler's Recitativo and Scherzo-Caprice, Ysaÿe's Ballade, Paganini caprices and the Introduction and Variations on "Nel cor più non mi sento" Op. 38, a set of short variations on a theme of Paganini by Roman Haas (born 1980), and Bach's Partita No. 3 - a disc to delight any lover of the violin.
