The Pavel Haas Quartet is one of the Czech Republic’s leading and most accomplished quartets. Their latest album—the group’s sixth—featuring Smetana’s string quartets is finally available on LP! Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1, “From My Life,” considered one of his masterpieces, was begun around October 1876—shortly after he lost his hearing—and completed toward the end of that year. However, due to its technical challenges, a performer for the premiere could not be found immediately, It was not until approximately two years after its completion—on March 26, 1879—that a private rehearsal was finally held at the home of his friend Sulub-Deburnov, followed by the public premiere three days later (Dvořák played the viola for the private rehearsal only). It is considered one of Smetana’s masterpieces, embodying the characteristics of Romantic music—emotion and subjectivity. On the other hand, the String Quartet No. 2, composed from 1882 to 1883, is a dramatic work filled with intense passion and a sense of pathos within a free form. It should be noted that the Smetana Quartet recorded acclaimed sessions of these two works in March 1962 at Domovina Studio—the very same venue used for this recording—which were released on the Supraphon label; Now, more than half a century later, we can say that a new masterpiece has been born, performed by the Pavel Haas Quartet, who are leading the way into a new era!
