Netopil's new album turns to Janacek, a composer he knows inside out World premiere recording of the Glagolitic Mass in the original "September 1927" version Tomas Netopil, one of the leading Czech conductors of his generation, has been widely hailed as a Janacek specialist. His previous release, Sinfonietta, Taras Bulba and other works (SU4131), was warmly received by Gramophone. He has said that the Glagolitic Mass was his first Janacek experience, a work that captivated him when he had only just begun learning the violin - so expectations for this recording run high. A masterpiece in which Moravian folk song, sophisticated vocal writing and Janacek's own highly personal idiom come together, the Glagolitic Mass was first performed in Brno in December 1927. The composer revised it the following year, and it is that final revision that is normally performed today. This release restores the work as it sounded at the Brno premiere, and is the world premiere recording of the "September 1927 original version" edited by the musicologist Jiri Zahradka. Netopil writes in the booklet: "When you compare this original version with the familiar version in general use today, you are confronted with several quite fundamental differences in instrumentation, in structure and in the motivic material." Charles Mackerras, another great Janacek interpreter, also recorded an "urtext version based on the composer's autograph", but his is a nine-movement scheme with an Intrada at both beginning and end - a different proposition from Netopil's, which retains the eight-movement layout of the standard version. The coupling is The Eternal Gospel. Janacek began it at the same time as the opera The Excursions of Mr Broucek to the Moon and completed it in the spring of 1914, a few months before the outbreak of the First World War. Reflecting both the impact of the war and a spiritual preoccupation, it is a work that remains almost unknown and has been recorded only a handful of times. Born in 1975 in Kromeriz in the eastern Czech Republic, Tomas Netopil has appeared at the Salzburg Festival and with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Staatskapelle Dresden, and became General Music Director of the city of Essen from the 2013/14 season. Engagements with the Semperoper Dresden, the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Orchestre de Paris and the London Philharmonic are also in the diary. King International
