Limbozzi Prize in Florence, won first prize at the Prague Spring International Competition the following May, and then, the very next month, also took first prize at the Paolo Borciani Competition—one of the world’s three major string quartet competitions. With their overwhelming talent, the Pavel-Haas Quartet has garnered significant attention as an ensemble set to lead the next generation. Their fourth album, recorded in June 2010, features Dvořák, the composer who represents their musical roots. Alongside the “New World Symphony” and the “Cello Concerto,” it is one of the finest achievements of Dvořák’s American period, including “America”—one of the most popular pieces in the genre, known for its accessible melodies. Furthermore, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 13—which the Pavel-Haas Quartet perfected during their fall 2009 tour—is the composer’s masterpiece, begun after his return from America and completed upon his recovery from illness.
