Smetana’s “My Country” The 65th Prague Spring International Music Festival kicked off in 2010 with the traditional complete performance of Smetana’s “My Country.” Following the opening concert at Smetana Hall in the City Hall on May 12—the anniversary of Smetana’s death—the prestigious program was conducted over two nights at the Rudolfinum by Jakub Hrůša, a rising star in the Czech music scene born in 1981. Through guest appearances with the New Japan Philharmonic and other orchestras, Hrůša has earned a reputation for his meticulous musical approach, backed by thorough rehearsals, and has steadily been gaining a following among Japanese fans. Here, too, while paying due respect to the festival’s venerable tradition, his focus on a faithful and well-rehearsed interpretation of the score was particularly impressive. His performance of “The Moldau,” with its refreshing display of youthful, supple sensitivity; “Tabor,” depicted with tremendous intensity; and “Braník”—all part of a program that was an overwhelming success—it is entirely understandable why he was selected for the opening concert at an age comparable to that of Václav Neumann.
