The second release features Haas’s Quartets No. 1 and No. 3, and Janáček’s “Kreutzer Sonata” Following back-to-back victories at the “Prague Spring” International Competition in May 2004 and the Paolo Borciani Competition (one of the world’s three major string quartet competitions) in June of the same year, and their debut album featuring Janáček and Haas’s Quartet No. 2 (SU3877) winning the 2007 Newcomer of the Year award from BBC Music Magazine—all of which have brought attention to the highly promising Pavel Haas Quartet. Following their debut, their second album features works by Haas—the composer after whom the ensemble is named—and Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1. These two pieces by Haas, who met his end at Auschwitz, were composed in 1920 when he was still a student at the Brno Conservatory. Written in the style of a fantasia, it is characterized by a single sonata movement lasting approximately 13 minutes. The Third Sonata, with its three-movement finale structured as a theme and variations, was written in 1938, at the peak of Haas’s creative career. Its tragic music reflects the atmosphere of the times, marked by the rapidly rising threat of the Nazis. And now, Janáček’s *Kreutzer Sonata*, which serves as the concluding piece to this set of two works. This masterpiece, written in a single burst over just nine days, is a perfect fit for this ensemble—overflowing with youthful passion—thanks to its content steeped in a thick, intense eroticism.
