Nearly a year after last year’s Dvořák release (SU3802), the next installment in the symphony collection series by Válek and his flagship ensemble, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, features Tchaikovsky. Four symphonies, including the “Pathétique,” are captured in this latest 2005 recording. Although their style differs considerably from that of Russia, they are, after all, a Slavic orchestra. Their chemistry with Tchaikovsky is outstanding! The strings—a tradition and source of pride common to Czech orchestras—and the brilliant brass section. Combined with the passionate conducting of Válek—a familiar figure from his guest appearances in Japan—the result is a truly compelling performance. Another key point is that the tracks span the entire disc without any interruptions in the middle of a piece. Total running time: 237 minutes and 37 seconds.
