Volume 7 of the complete Smetana piano works, performed by the accomplished Czech pianist Iotka Chekhova. This two-disc set brings together works Smetana composed in his early twenties, the majority of which are world premiere recordings. Although these are early works, they were composed around the time he first made his mark as a pianist, and as such, they are all rich in pianistic effects. Smetana’s only piano sonata, while simple at the outset, unfolds into a world of breathtaking difficulty. All of Smetana’s piano works are fascinating, and it is surprising to see that even from his earliest days he employed a modern pianism that surpassed that of Chopin and Liszt; the day may yet come when he is recognized as a “great composer for the piano.” King International
