Sweeping Promises, the Boston-based post-punk band whose previous album was widely acclaimed—including being named one of the best albums of the year by numerous media outlets—has released their highly anticipated third album, *You Say I Romanticize*, via Sub Pop. Sweeping Promises first made their mark on the global punk underground with their debut album, *Hunger for a Way Out*. This album became one of the breakout releases in the music industry during the pandemic lockdowns. In 2023, they released *Good Living Is Coming for You*, a satirical work that sharply critiques capitalism. It was named one of the best albums of the year by numerous media outlets, including Pitchfork, NPR, Paste, and the BBC. Bassist/vocalist Lira Mondal and guitarist Caufield Schnug took their approach a step further with their third album. The central theme of *You Say I Romanticize* is already hinted at in its title. Inspired by the lyrics of “Write Lightly,” the album’s closing track, the album tells a story of how the importance of self-expression through writing is overshadowed by “professionalism.” Many of the characters Mondal portrays here are outsiders who are marginalized by society and passionately devoted to various specific ideologies. The raw songwriting on *YouSayIRomanticize* is characterized by an equally raw musical approach. The band invited live drummer Spenser Gralla to join them in the recording sessions, infusing the tracks with the same sense of urgency found in their live performances. The art community beloved by Sweeping Promises—a community of eccentrics who channel their status as “outsiders” into vibrant art and punk rock—also has its dark side. *You Say I Romanticize* carries on the spirit the duo has built, exploring the obsessive and fanatical aspects of being marginalized and isolated from mainstream society.
