Sinfonia of London (SOL). American composer Kenneth Fuchs, born in 1956, won the 2018 61st Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium for his collection of works conducted by Joanne Falletta. He leads the current American music scene in a wide range of orchestral, brass band, and chamber music. This second collection of Hooks' orchestral works by the renowned duo of John Wilson & SOL includes the "Bass Trombone Concerto," which loosely follows the classical sonata form but makes full use of the instrument's range and allows the listener to appreciate its lyrical side, the "Concerto for Bass Trombone," which Hooks wrote for the Chor-Anglais, and the The "Even Tide" for alto saxophone and orchestra, a re-edited version of an early concerto written by Fuchs for Cole Anglais; the orchestral version of the "Point of Tranquility" inspired by the painting of the same name by Maurice Louis, originally composed as a wind band version; and the "Piano Concerto" for bass trombone, composed for John Wilson & SOL, and performed by Helen Franke. Light Year, an orchestral suite in six movements that captures the breathtaking scale and mysterious nature of the universe, composed for John Wilson & SOL and inspired by a series of paintings by Helen Frankenthaler. The soloist is James Buckle, a proud young British virtuoso who was a bass trombonist with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the only brass player to win the Royal Overseas League Gold Medal at the age of 23. Timothy McAllister, one of today's most celebrated classical saxophonists, who has performed with the world's finest orchestras, from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms, on more than 50 recordings and in over 200 premieres by renowned and up-and-coming composers is among the names on the list. *Recordings:December 5-6, 2023; July 31, 2023; August 1, 2023; January 8, 2024, St. Augustine's Church, Kilburn, London.
