He performs his own concerto in collaboration with Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic! Marius Neset, a Norwegian saxophonist and composer born in Bergen in 1985, makes his Chandos debut in a collaboration with Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic! Marius Neset has won the “Spellemannprisen”—known as the “Norwegian Grammy”—and has been named one of DownBeat magazine’s “25 for the Future.” As a jazz saxophonist, he has performed with renowned jazz musicians from around the world, including Miho Hasama. He has also garnered attention as a composer of music for concert halls, and this album features four new works for orchestra composed by him. Three of these works are concertos featuring the saxophone, in which Marius Neset himself showcases his brilliant technique and musicality as the soloist. The main concerto, “Man-Made,” is a powerful five-movement work lasting approximately 30 minutes that depicts the history of human creativity—from Edison to Apollo to Nobel—while addressing the challenge of climate change we face today. We present a diverse range of expressions that transcend genres, brought to life by Neset’s playing, in which he handles the saxophone with such ease that it seems as if it were an extension of his own body. Edward Gardner and the prestigious Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra of Norway—with whom he maintains a strong relationship after extending his tenure as principal conductor through 2023—have seen their recording “Sibelius: *Pelléas et Mélisande*” (RCHSA5217)—which was selected as a “Special Selection” by *Record Arts*—has become a long-selling hit, and their recording of “Britten: *Peter Grimes*” (CHSA5250), featuring Stuart Skelton in the title role, achieved the remarkable feat of winning the “Recording of the Year” award at the 2021 Gramophone Awards in the UK.
