A new Elgar recording by Sir Andrew Davis—the “evangelist of British music” who carried on the legacy of the late Richard Hickox, and the “Elgar Medal 2014” recipient, hailed as the Elgar conductor of the 21st century! The orchestra is the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra of Norway, which has been making a big splash in recordings with Neeme Järvi and Edward Gardner. This marks the first recording by the duo of Andrew Davis and the Bergen Philharmonic since their hugely successful recording of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto (CHSA5134), featuring Jennifer Pike as soloist. Performed alongside three choirs—the Bergen Philharmonic Choir, the Collegium Musicum Choir (a Bergen-based choir), and the Edvard Grieg Choir—this recording presents a secular cantata based on the saga of Olaf I, who became King of Norway in 995. Davis’s new Elgar recording—his previous release, Elgar’s “The Dream of Gerontius” (CHSA5140)—was named “Recording of the Month” by the BBC Music Magazine and has been steadily garnering high praise.
