Accompanying music for Dilius's great play in five acts, "Hassan". One of the greatest successes of his career, the complete incidental music for the play "Hassan", set in medieval Baghdad. The music of Frederick Dilius was introduced to the world by the master musician Thomas Beecham. Composed in his early 60s, "Hassan" is an incidental music for a play in five acts by Frederick Dilius, who traveled throughout Europe and the United States, including England, Germany, the United States, and France, and was a close friend of Grieg's. The music is set in Baghdad in the Middle Ages. Hassan" is based on the poem "The Golden Journey to Samarkand" by the English poet James Elroy Frecker, which evokes Arabic culture, and the serenade in the first act is also known in a solo viola version. The premiere took place in London on September 20, 1923, and was a critical sensation, with a total of 281 performances, making it one of the most successful productions of Diliath's career.The play is a sinuous double tale, intertwining the stories of the cruel and vindictive caliph, the courtly confectioner, the lovesick but worldly-wise Hassan, and the two young lovers, Pervaneh and Raffi, who are condemned to a horrible and cruel death. Flecker's poem is based on 19th-century English translations of The Thousand and One Nights and other fictional tales and travel literature, a product of the racial and class attitudes of the time, the tyrannical oriental court and its cruel barbarism.
