Description:

The 6th installment in the acclaimed “Music of Exiles” series! A collection of chamber music works by Alberto Hemshi! The “Music in Exile Series” by the ARC Ensemble! Alberto Hemshi, known for his *Collection of Sephardic Folk Songs*! The latest volume in the “Music in Exile—Music of the Exiles” series, presented by the ARC Ensemble (Artists of the Royal Conservatory)—one of Canada’s foremost cultural ambassadors—features the chamber music works of Alberto Hemshi (1898–1975), a composer from Anatolia (present-day Turkey) renowned for collecting and preserving the traditional music of the Sephardim. Albert Hemshi (1898–1975), a composer from Anatolia (present-day Turkey) renowned for collecting and preserving the traditional music of the Sephardim. The ARC Ensemble is dedicated to researching and reviving music that was suppressed under 20th-century totalitarian regimes and has continued to be marginalized ever since; previous releases in the series include “Ben-Haim (CHAN10769),” “Fitelberg (CHAN10877),” “Simon Laks (CHAN10983),” “Kaufman (CHAN20170),” and “Klebanoff (CHAN20231).” Albert Hemshi was a Sephardic (Spanish Jewish) composer born in 1898 in Turgutlu, Anatolia (present-day Turkey), who studied in Italy. Jews had lived in Anatolia for over 2,000 years, but following the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal, Sephardim arrived there, causing the Jewish population to increase significantly. Subsequently, the population plummeted due to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of Nazism, the establishment of Israel, and the rise of anti-Semitism in Arab countries. Hemshi, who had trained at the Milan Conservatory, returned to Anatolia and resolved to collect and notate as much Sephardic traditional music as possible. Like many composers—such as Bartók, Kodály, and Vaughan Williams—he understood how traditional melodies, along with the various performance styles and customs that support them, served as a source of inspiration for his own music.
