The Cambridge St. John’s College Choir is one of the world’s leading choirs, boasting a history and tradition spanning more than 300 years—having served in worship services since the 1670s, in the latter half of the 17th century. The St. John’s College Choir’s new recording, released exclusively on Chandos, is a collection of French sacred choral works featuring the “Missa Solemnis” by Louis Vierne and Jean Langlais, combined with short pieces by Olivier Messiaen, Francis Poulenc. The “Missa Solemnis” works by Viérne and Langlais share similarities with the “Missa in F-sharp minor, Op. 36” by Charles-Marie Widor, who was Viérne’s organ teacher. However, both composers—who lost their sight at a young age, studied at the Paris Conservatory, and served as renowned organists at major Parisian churches—employ a more modern and colorful organ style. Under the baton of renowned choral conductor Andrew Nesingha, experience the sacred choral music of early 20th-century France, performed by rich male voices and pure boy sopranos steeped in history.
