Goffredo Petrassi, a Master of the 20th Century! ■ Chandos’s “Musica Italiana” series, currently being conducted by the fiery maestro Gianandrea Noseda. Following the outstanding 20th-century Italian composers Respighi, Wolf-Ferrari, Casella, and Dallapiccola, Noseda’s baton now brings to life two sacred works by Goffredo Petrassi (1904–2003)! ■Petraschi, along with Dalla Piccola and Scherzi, played a central role among Italian composers of the mid- to late 20th century. The “Magnificat” (1934–36), which reveals the influence of Stravinsky and elements of diatonicism, and “Psalm No. 9” (1939–40) are representative works from Petrasche’s early period, blending medieval and Renaissance polyphony with modern and contemporary harmony. While the *Magnificat*—featuring soprano, chorus, and orchestra—is presented here in its world premiere recording, the *Psalm No. 9* is scored for two-part chorus, string orchestra, brass, percussion, and piano.
