Following the previous release featuring Falla (CHAN10735), the second installment of the “La Música de España” series features the orchestral works of the Catalan composer Javier Monsalvatge (1912–2002), who left a significant mark on Spanish music in the latter half of the 20th century! ■Born in Girona, Catalonia, Monsalvatge studied violin and composition at the Barcelona Conservatory and lived through the Franco regime. He was a unique figure in 20th-century Spanish music who incorporated a wide range of musical characteristics into his own style, including his interest in ballet, his fascination with the music of the West Indies and the Antilles as well as traditional Catalan music, and influences from the Spanish Six, the twelve-tone technique, and avant-garde music. ■ The program, conducted by Mena, features four works by Monsalvatge: his masterpiece “Five Negro Songs,” “Partita 1958” (which reveals the influence of Milhaud), and “Symphonic Kaleidoscope (Calidscopisimfonic),” based on the unfinished and unpublished ballet “The Guardian Angel.” Montsalvatge, who lived between the Spanish Nationalist School and avant-garde music, served as a bridge between the two.
