Following the collection of orchestral works by Johan Halvorsen (1864–1935), the new series from Neeme Järvi & the Bergen Philharmonic features the orchestral works of fellow Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen (1840–1911)! In search of new horizons, Svendsen traveled from Norway to Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. Influenced by the music of the radical composers of his time—such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt—Svendsen was a great Nordic composer who, alongside his close friend Grieg, helped establish Norwegian National Romanticism. Featuring works such as the “Festive Polonaise, Op. 12,” composed for the coronation of King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway, this recording showcases Svendsen performed by Neeme Järvi—who continues his meteoric rise—alongside the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
