Neeme Järvi, the patriarch of the renowned Estonian musical family, the Järvis, continues to maintain an energetic career that rivals even that of two world-class maestros, Paavo and Christian. Here is the third installment in the Halvorsen series featuring the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra of Norway—one of Järvi’s key current partners, alongside the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Scotland and the Hague Residentie Orchestra in the Netherlands! Johann Halvorsen (Halvorsen) inherited and further developed the Norwegian National Romanticism established by Grieg and Svendsen. The Bergen Philharmonic, where Halvorsen served as concertmaster and principal conductor during his lifetime, is the ideal ensemble for Chandos and Järvi’s “Halvorsen Orchestral Works” series. Another highlight is the use of a new edition of “Symphony No. 3”—which Halvorsen himself called a “Lyrical Symphony” and whose first movement features a motif by Grieg—prepared by the Norwegian conductor and pianist Jørn Fosseheim. Furthermore, since this recording by Järvi and the Bergen Philharmonic marks the world premiere of “The Black Swan” and “The Wedding of the Rooks in the Forest of Ras,” fans of Nordic music and Halvorsen alike simply cannot miss it!
