The latest album from the powerhouse duo—Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic—representing Chandos, one of the world’s largest independent labels. Noseda, who has actively pursued recordings of relatively rare repertoire—including works by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Dvořák, Dallapiccola, and Kalvovič—has finally recorded a large-scale major work! “Faust” is the story of an idealistic, intellectually curious man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for superhuman knowledge. Liszt designated the official title of the “Faust Symphony” as “Faust Symphony in Three Figures,” and each movement is named after a character from Goethe’s poetic drama: Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles. For this performance, Noseda is using the “original version” composed in 1854. The key point is that this version does not yet include the chorus in the final movement, resulting in a sound that is significantly different from the standard “1857 version.” Recently, Ivan Fischer caused a stir by recording both versions. Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic performed this “Faust Symphony” at the 2005 BBC Proms, and since it was hailed as a masterful performance not only by the audience but also by magazines and the media—including *The Times*—expectations for this recording are naturally running high.
