Who would have thought they’d create a second album that I’d come to love even more than the Arctic Monkeys’ debut—an album I once adored so deeply? These four musicians brought about that miracle with a clear “will to change.” It’s unbelievable. In an interview around the time of their debut, vocalist Alex Turner said, “We want to constantly create new sounds, far removed from trends.” True to his word, every track on this album sounds different from anything currently playing in the UK and US. The drums—dynamic to a fault!—unfold a diverse array of rhythms, while the guitars are at times heavy, at times making use of space to add a touch of brilliance. The bass, which functions as a counter-melody, possesses a presence unheard of in typical guitar rock, and the song structures themselves pleasantly defy the conventions of “pop music.” All of this is led by Alex’s verbose melody lines, and it’s the synergy of these elements that makes it truly miraculous. “It’s not about being reborn, but having the ability to move forward and evolve. It’s about not being afraid to evolve. And while it’s pop music, I want to create pop music that’s deep and interesting—I guess that’s it.” —When asked about the “authenticity” they realized after completing this album, Alex replied in this way.
