HOBOJOHNSON is a poetry rapper from Sacramento. His stage name comes from the time in his late teens when he was kicked out of his home and lived as a homeless person, sleeping in a Toyota Corolla. However, it was during that time as a homeless person that he honed his skills as an artist. After releasing his debut album in 2015, he released his second album, *THE RISING OF HOBOJOHNSON*, in 2017. He really “went viral” thanks to a music video he submitted for the TINYDESK Contest hosted by NPR, the American public radio network. For this contest—in which the winner would get to perform on NPR’s popular segment “TINYDESK CONCERT”—he recorded a live performance video of the song “Peach Scone” with his band, LOVEMAKERS. Filmed in the backyard of one of the LOVEMAKERS’ guitarists, the video—which shows him screaming and rambling nonstop with the band behind him—instantly became a sensation, racking up over 50 million streams in the blink of an eye. As a result, he caught the attention of the U.S. media and ultimately landed a contract with Reprise. His latest album has already arrived. His previous album was *THE RISE OF HOBO JOHNSON*, but this new release is titled *THE FALL OF HOBO JOHNSON*. The first single, “Typical Story,” features tense spoken-word vocals over a growling guitar backing track—a track that demonstrates how HOBOJOHNSON’s unique musical style has been taken to a whole new level. The follow-up single, “Uglykid,” features a mellow melody and a catchy chorus layered with rap verses in which he talks about being an “ugly guy.” Regardless of these specific tracks, the songs of HOBOJOHNSON—a “lifestyle artist” who chronicles the world “within a 100-meter radius”—have garnered overwhelming empathy from fans of his generation, who say, “This is exactly me.” “This new album is a mix of songs and poems that have been swirling around in my head for the past few years.
