After a hiatus, they've returned with their new album '(((((ultraSOUND)))))', their first in about five years! For a band that had temporarily stopped activities, this latest work feels less like a comeback and more like a rebirth. The California band, known throughout the 2010s for their monochrome pop-rock melancholy, has rediscovered color—or at least shades—within their own sound, culminating in this new work. Throughout its 15 tracks, '(((((ultraSOUND))))) captures the band reclaiming its own pulse. "There were times when I couldn't find the words," frontman Jesse Rutherford says. "I needed an ultrasound to understand what I was feeling. It was like literally looking inside and realizing, 'Oh, this is what was happening.'" The album opens with "Hula Girl." It paints a surreal scene: a hula girl figurine swaying on the dashboard as the protagonist feels broken yet alive, like a crash-test dummy. "This is a song about second chances," Rutherford explains. "You're alive. Get out of bed." Though not explicitly stated, it parallels the band's own rebirth—awakening battered and bruised, yet breathing again. (1/2)
