Fagioli, Cencic, Regineva, and other stars of the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival come together to revive Porpora's masterpiece, an opera in three acts first performed in 1738 at the Teatro delle Dame, one of Rome's most famous opera houses. Carlo il Calvo" refers to Charles II (Charles le Chauve), nicknamed the "bald-headed king," and is based on a libretto written in Venice in 1699, a subject that A. Scarlatti, Telemann, and others have also musicalized. Porpora's score is preserved at the Naples Conservatory. The film depicts Europe in the early Middle Ages, when the heir to the throne, Charles II, is kidnapped and disintegrates due to a succession struggle. The protagonist is still a child, and the characters around him sing the story. The breathtaking outbursts of emotion, including the mother's despair, are vividly musicalized, and Porpora's tremendous compositional ability is astonishing. Both the vocal and orchestral music are full and overwhelming. The revival will be performed at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival on September 3, 2020. The production, which featured a star-studded cast of singers from the world of classical music including Fagioli, Cencic, and Regeneva, combined with a production that reads like 20th century Cuba and an in-depth performance by Georges Petrou, who is one of the most prominent figures in the world of baroque opera, has created a great buzz.Countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic, who is also the artistic director of the PARNASSUS ARTS label, is involved in the production as producer.
