The String Quintet D956, Schubert's late masterpiece, was completed only a few months before his death, and its unusual composition with two cellos creates deep shadows and a unique lyricism. The Artsies Quartet and cellist Martin Rummel, who were inspired by the Alban Berg Quartet and William Preiss, among others, have explored this work for many years, culminating in a recording dedicated to their two great teachers, Günter Pichler and Valentin Erben.
