Bernhard Lang (b. 1957), an Austrian composer, draws on a wide range of musical styles and genres—from free jazz and improvisation to hip-hop and DJ culture—to create music that defies categorization. This work, *The Cold Trip*, is based on Schubert’s *Winterreise* and belongs to Lang’s cycle of approximately 30 pieces known as “Monadology,” which represents a form of metacomposition using original scores from music history spanning from the year 900 to the present. Part 1 features Schubert’s Songs 1 through 12 performed by vocals and four guitars, while Part 2 features Songs 13 through 24 performed by vocals and piano, and a laptop, utilizing a sample set from a prepared piano—specially prepared to create a palimpsest of Schubert’s original textures—in the playback files.
