Lisa Smirnova, the Mozart Expert! A Collection of Piano Concertos Arranged for Chamber Music! Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, arranged by Czerny for flute, string quartet, and double bass! Lisa Smirnova, a Mozart expert who studied under renowned piano pedagogue Karl-Heinz Kemmerling of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, as well as Maria Krusio, Robert Levin—presented by Mozart expert Lisa Smirnova and the New Classic Ensemble Vienna, which she founded in 2007: a chamber music edition of Mozart’s Piano Concertos! Of particular note is No. 20, K. 466. While Hummel’s arrangement (piano, flute, violin, and cello) is the most famous chamber music version of this work, this recording features Karl Czerny’s version, which adds a double bass (piano, flute, two violins, viola, cello, and double bass). Czerny’s arrangement is exceptionally well-crafted; while preserving the essence of Mozart’s original composition, it creates an orchestral sound that emphasizes rich overtones and low frequencies. Even in No. 12, K. 414—which was originally intended to be accompanied by a string quartet—the double bass participates by reinforcing the cello part. Furthermore, we are performing K. 386, which is said to have been composed as an alternative to the final movement of K. 414, between the second and third movements. Tokyo M Plus
