Description:
A collection of piano variations by Louise Falanques (1804-1875), one of the most important instrumental composers of France in the first half of the 19th century, and an unusually active female composer of her time. It includes "Variations on a Russian Song" acclaimed by Robert Schumann and two world premiere recordings. Falancq was a professor of piano at the Paris Conservatory (the first woman professor in the 19th century), and together with her husband Aristide Falancq, a music publisher, she published Le Tresor des Pianistes (The Pianist's Treasury), the first French historical selection of keyboard music in 23 volumes, which is important in the history of piano music. Op.10 is also interesting in that it uses a theme by Georges Onslow (1784-1853), another important French composer of instrumental music of the same period.
