German Lieder by Liem Dedicated to Pregardien Among Wolfgang Rihm’s more than 400 compositions, his works set to text hold a special place. The three song cycles featured on this CD were all written for tenor Christoph Pregardien and pianist Siegfried Mauser, and were premiered by them. Composed in the traditional lied form—for voice and piano alone—these songs feature melodic lines that follow the text with a “beauty” that embodies the very essence of the German lied; yet, a novel piano part is added that seems to challenge the voice, unfolding a world unique to Reim. In this performance, Pregardien—at the time of the recording (2003)—was in absolutely top form! With his lustrous voice and profound interpretation of the text, he delivers the very best of both. This is a wonderful CD that allows you to truly feel how the tradition of the German art song lives on in the present day. King International
