Contrasting the Charms of the Clarinet and Brass Ensemble! Featuring master musicians Hans Gansch and Gábor Tárkév! Titled *Wind and Brass*, this album presents an ambitious program that highlights the contrast between woodwind and brass instruments. The Salzburg Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic (now the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic), one of Europe’s leading wind ensembles, vividly showcases the unique charms of each instrument family through the contrasting formations of a clarinet choir and a brass ensemble. In the works for clarinet choir, Václav Neribér’s *Chorale and Dance* contrasts solemn chorales with dance-like elements, while Adam Gobe’s *Burlesque* unfolds with colorful music incorporating elements of klezmer and Neapolitan folk songs. Meanwhile, the program for brass ensemble features Richard Strauss’s magnificent *Festmusik für die Stadt Wien* (Festive Music for the City of Vienna), composed in his later years, as well as Jan Kutzir’s *Brass Symphony*, commissioned by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble (PJBE)—a pioneer in the field of brass ensemble music— as well as Chris Hazel’s humorous *Three Cats*, inspired by his beloved cat, and *Blues March* (from *Divertimento*), a representative work for brass decet by bass trombonist Raymond Preml, who was also an active member of the PJBE. Another highlight is the ensemble featuring a stellar lineup, including Hans Gansch, former principal trumpeter of the Vienna Philharmonic, and Gábor Tárkév, former principal trumpeter of the Berlin Philharmonic. Conducting duties are shared by Danny Bonvin, also known as a trombonist, and clarinetist Alberto Osterhammer. Their interpretations, drawing on their respective instrumental expertise, further bring out the charm of both ensembles.
