Led by Principal Conductor Hansjörg Angerer, the Salzburg Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic (now the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic)—one of Europe’s leading wind ensembles—was founded in 2002 with the mission of elevating wind music to the same artistic level as orchestral music. This album captures the historic inaugural concert from their founding year, embodying that very philosophy. It features works by Richard Strauss, Friedrich Gulda, Ernst Ludwig Reitner, and Werner Pirchner, performed in collaboration with renowned virtuosos. Beginning with Strauss’s majestic fanfare, the album features Guld’s *Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra*, commissioned by Heinrich Schiff. The soloist is Clemens Hagen, a world-renowned cellist who serves as a professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and is a member of the Hagen String Quartet. This unique masterpiece, consisting of five movements that incorporate diverse elements such as classical, jazz, rock, and folk music, is brought to life through Hagen’s overwhelming technique and the wind ensemble’s electrifying sound. Furthermore, in the work commissioned by Leitner, the young virtuoso Martin Grubinger makes a striking impression on the marimba. The program concludes with Pirchner’s *Birthday Music*, bringing the concert to a close with the rich, colorful sound unique to wind ensembles.
