He studied at the Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School, the Vienna State University of Music, and the Salzburg Mozarteum School of Music. Studied with Gérard Széhé and others. Won top prizes in many competitions. He has performed operas and concerts of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, and others. He also specializes in contemporary American music and has released CDs. Gilbert Kalish, piano, was born in New York in 1935. He studied at Columbia College, founded the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble in 1962, and became a pianist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1969. Since then, he has given recitals around the world and appeared at many prominent music festivals. He has also devoted himself to teaching younger students at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and elsewhere. Scarlata's straightforward, pedantic singing style is very pleasing. Her voice is even across the registers, and she conveys the scene vividly. The expressive power of her voice from the midrange to the low range is noteworthy. Both lyrical and dramatic scenes were pleasant to listen to. Kalish's piano is also excellent, making one forget his age, which was 85 at this time. The sound and technique support the singing appropriately, and one does not feel the age difference between him and Scarlata. The result is a wonderful expression of all that has been achieved in her career. (Tobu Shoji)
