The Bridge label has been particularly dedicated to showcasing the work of American composer Mamlock, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday this year, and this disc marks the sixth release in the series. Born in Berlin to a Jewish family, she fled to the United States following the rise of the Nazis. She studied composition with Roger Sessions and also studied under George Szell for a time. While she herself stated that she was influenced by Hindemith in her early works, judging by the pieces included on this disc—which are written in 12-tone technique or free atonality—there is no doubt that she was influenced by the Second Viennese School. However, there are many highlights, such as the rhythmic ingenuity not found in Schoenberg’s work and the resonant, lyrical romantic melodies. This is a valuable collection of works by a composer who is virtually unknown in Japan. Tobu Shoji Co., Ltd.
