This album features a collection of French flute music composed during the “good old days,” from the late 19th century to just before the outbreak of World War I. Vidor, best known for his organ works, composed this “Suite,” one of his few pieces for flute. Jules Mouquet is a well-known figure among flutists, and his “Pan’s Flute” is a brilliant piece that perfectly captures the spirit of the Belle Époque. Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” is arranged for flute and piano, with the flute taking on all the melodic parts. Robert Langevin, a native of Quebec, Canada, served as associate principal flutist of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for 13 years before becoming principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic in the 2000–01 season.
