This is Volume 2 of American pianist Anne-Marie McDermott’s Haydn Piano Sonata Collection (Volume 1 is BCD9438, a 2-CD set that includes two piano concertos). Anne-Marie McDermott is a pianist with ties to Japan; she won second place and the Best Performance of a Japanese Work Award at the 1st Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in 1991, an achievement that launched her international career. McDermott’s interpretation of Haydn is outstanding in both the lighthearted and spirited music of the fast movements and the pure, emotionally rich music of the slow movements; above all, one can strongly sense her deep love for Haydn. In particular, the sonatas in A-flat major (Nos. 46 and 31) are exquisite. Of course, the famous D major sonata and the other two pieces are also truly wonderful. Anyone who enjoys Haydn’s piano sonatas will undoubtedly look forward to a follow-up album after listening to this one. Tobu Land System
