The shocking concert footage is back! Gregory Sokolov's live video from Sokolov in Paris 2002 at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées is now available on MEDICI ARTS. Many of you must have been shocked by his overwhelming musicality when it was previously released on the NAIVE label (out of print). The Russian pianist won the first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of just 16. Although Sokolov is highly reputed by some music lovers, his activities are veiled in Japan. When he appears in the faint light that illuminates the piano, the air changes dramatically, a sense of tension prevails, and you are drawn into his world. The video by the genius Bruno Monsangion also makes this wonderful concert even more effective. In Beethoven's Sonata, he delves into the core of the piece, leaving the audience stunned.The dances of Armenian composer Komitas are fantastically beautiful, and Prokofiev's "War Sonata" is brilliantly played with the amazing dynamism of forte and piano produced by his huge body. The encore was a whopping five pieces. The concert ended amidst a sense of tension that did not let up until the Bach preludes arranged by Giloti.
